This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My students have not yet discovered books in that way as they are beginning readers in kindergarten. Experiencing reading with the Tag Readers will give them a new way to read books and encourage reading.

Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area of California that is predominantly Spanish-speaking.

It is an area in which violence occurs daily and its proximity to oil refineries cause health issues. Our school is a place where the children can come and know that they are safe and protected. We strive to give them a place where they can learn without worry. We are lucky to have Breakfast in the Classroom program ,which feeds our children breakfast in addition to the free lunch offered to every child in our school. The students in my class are obviously a part of this group and they love to get time to explore exciting new materials.

My Project

The Tag Reader system and the Tag Reader books will help my students learn to read in a fun and engaging way. They will be able to read with more independence by using the Tag readers, which will also encourage a love of reading. It will help them learn letter sounds, how to blend sounds together to make words, teach them new words they didn't know before as well as some basic print skills such as, page turning, print directionality while reading, author/illustrator, etc. This gives them an opportunity to continue learning what I've taught in whole group in a very personal way.

These Tag readers and books will make a huge difference for my students.

Most of them have parents who work long hours and just do not have much time to sit and read with their children. Through this system, they will be given this opportunity to have stories read to them as a parent would as well as give them an opportunity to practice what they have learned in class.
