This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a visual and performing arts high school where the majority of our students come from low income families.
What I love about my students is that they are incredibly creative as young artists and also apply themselves to their academic studies. They are special because, even though they have disabilities they routinely work hard to overcome the difficulties they face.
A recent success in the classroom happened when a student with attention and anxiety challenges was able to use technology to help him focus and successfully organize information when working on a lengthy project and research paper.
My Project
Colored overlays are plastic colored sheets that are placed over text. The overlays help students with reading comprehension, fluency and accuracy.
Reading from a white background is difficult for students with learning disabilities including dyslexia and autism.
The reading ruler will give my students have access to a smaller overlay that they can use with novels vs. the large overlay sheets that would be used with worksheets/textbooks. The reading ruler also helps guide students in their reading. In my experience have seen make great progress with these small changes. Having access to both the large sheet overlays and reading rulers will facilitate with their ability access the general education curriculum.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
