Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My scholars (they work too hard to just be called students) are entering kindergarten this year curious about the world around them, and eager to learn to read to begin discovering the world on their own. We need a diverse kindergarten library to encourage reading their way to college!

The scholars at our public charter school begin their path to college on the first day of kindergarten by attending school 190 days a year from 7:40 a.m.

until 4:00 p.m. They are readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians. Most importantly, they are on the path to college despite many coming from impoverished backgrounds. Our school opened its doors with a kindergarten class in August 2009. Thus, my scholars, the College Class of 2029, are the fourth group of kindergarten scholars to enter our still growing school, which services children from four diverse communities in Rhode Island.

My Project

My scholars are on their way to becoming avid readers, with reading tastes as diverse as they are. A classroom library that includes fiction, non-fiction, poetry, biographies, and books about science will provide a multitude of opportunities for my scholars to enrich their academics and satisfy their curiosities. As previously stated, our school opened its doors in August 2009- we do not yet have official classroom libraries for each grade. This classroom library will also serve as the lending library for my scholars as we do not yet have a school library either. Scholars will be able to borrow books nightly to continue to foster their love of reading at home as well.

Children who become lifelong readers are inspired by early exposure to a variety of good literature.

Help me inspire my scholars by providing them with the beginning of our classroom library!
