Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember the first time you read an entire chapter book? Do you remember the sense of accomplishment you felt? Do you remember feeling like you were really growing up? My scholars can have those same feelings - even at the ages of 5 and 6!
I teach Kindergarten in a high-performing charter school to an economically and ethnically diverse population that serves four very different communities.
The teachers and families at my school believe that children deserve to reach their potential and there is no excuse for a child to not have the option to go to college. The scholars in my class are 26 of the brightest and most eager to learn students I have ever taught. They represent the core values of our school (perseverance, respect, integrity, discipline, and enthusiasm, aka PRIDE) almost without fail.
My Project
I am requesting fiction stories that will help the scholars to understand their feelings. Quality children's literature is the perfect way to help and guide young children to understand what they are feeling. I am also requesting a nonfiction collection about marine life. Young children are thrilled to read nonfiction books, see the photographs, and notice all of the text features like captions and headings. My scholars love learning about different animals and feeling like true researchers! Each day, my scholars have the opportunity to read books independently. While reading story books and other pieces of authentic literature are incredibly beneficial to all children, I believe it is just as important for scholars to be reading books that help them feel like real readers!
These books will help my scholars to become real readers!
Because we are putting all of our scholars on the path to college, surrounding them with quality literature will truly prepare them for all of the academic challenges that they will face.
