This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
During distance learning one of the greatest struggles is getting books into the hands of our students. As an English teacher this has forced me to rely heavily on internet resources/online reading. For the new school I want to get books into the hands of my students.
Reading is what all students can engage with deeply wherever they are.
My students care deeply about thinking about the world in which they live through the study of literature. Many of them have been confined to a small NYC apartments with multiple family members for months with minimal interaction with others their peers except through online meetings.
My Project
Students need to read everyday. This project will get some of the most important and thought provoking books coming out into their hands.
The pandemic has not stopped amazing literature from continuing to be published and these novels and memoirs are grappling with powerful issues that are relevant to the complexity of our lives and identities today.
All English teachers know if there is one thing that students can do during this time to continue to grow and learn is read. I want to give them access to titles that are newer and harder for them to get a hold of via online learning.
