Help me give my students books that will help them better understand racial injustice and motivate change in the next generation.

My Students
My students attend a small rural school in Ohio. Small schools have their advantages, but with the small numbers means less diversity in the population.
My students need to see more of America outside their small rural setting.
They need to see characters who do not look like them as much as they need to see characters who are like them. They also need to see how character challenges brought on by injustice can be eradicated. These children are living history and are part of the next generation to live out the momentum happening today.
My Project
A small group of students have already started reading Ghost by Jason Reynolds and are loving it! These books are quickly becoming a favorite in my room and a few more copies would be great to keep kids reading.
Nonfiction titles are rarely used as whole class novels and I believe there should be a shift to bring more full-length nonfiction reading.
After reading Just Mercy for myself I knew that I would need to use this book in class. Then visiting EJI in person solidified my decision to read more nonfiction on the topic of social injustice in my classroom.
These books will provide my students with engaging stories to motivate change. These stories share hope and life lessons that will stay with them forever.
