My Students
Little boys first learning to read have a hard time finding library books that are both easy enough and interesting. They are fascinated with superheroes, which makes the Turtleback I Can Read Superheroes series a perfect fit for my new readers.
I am the school librarian in a k-8 elementary school facing the challenges of poverty, gangs, and crime.
Children cannot walk to the public library; our new school library is their only source for self-selected reading material. Because of funding cuts, our administration has no money for the library. Thanks to heroic efforts by the primary teachers, our youngest students are reading and are enthusiastic about reading. Students are excited about coming to the library and selecting books. Unfortunately, our current collection does not contain many easy readers for our youngest patrons. Daily reading of self-selected material is an important part of our school literacy program, so we need these easy reader books.
My Project
Last Christmas, our library received paperback superhero titles through DonorsChoose. These titles have been loved nearly to death. Their high interest in Batman, Spiderman, and their friends inspires young readers to struggle through these books and to reread them. This has a powerful effect on reading ability. This year these titles are available in library binding and other superhero titles have become available. This is great news, as library binding is much more durable. Some of my readers have read every superhero book we have, and ask me if there are any other titles. Because there is such high interest in these books, the superhero bin is usually empty.
When students find the books that interest them, they are motivated to keep reading.
Comprehension and reading skills improve and students discover that reading brings them pleasure. Thus students are set on the path to a productive life-long habit. Our newest readers will snap up these superhero titles and develop their reading superpowers. Your gift will make selecting library books much more exciting for new readers and encourage them keep reading.
