Reading the Best Book of the Year With Bookworms

Help me give my students 14 copies of "The Vanishing Half" by Brit Bennett for their chosen book club selection. Each of the students will get their own personal copy and grow their personal libraries.

My Students

My students comes from multiple schools in New York City. Currently four high schools, three from Manhattan and one from the Bronx. Each one of the students is a universe to themselves with their distinct cultural backgrounds rooted in all parts of the Americas and beyond like the Dominican Republic, Guyana, Puerto Rico, and the US. I admire how talented they are and how they bring that to every book club meeting with their words, actions and interpretations of what we read together. My book club students cook, are makers, poets, writers and especially activists. Each one of them challenge me not only to be a better teacher but also to be a better person. Most but not all come from communities that are typically marginalized but that doesn't define my beautiful students. They refuse to be put in boxes that don't serve them.

They are committed to this book club experience that we have been engaged in for more than 5 years.

They read young adult literature and adult books written by Black authors and other POC (People of Color) writers in this book club that has been growing in love.

My Project

Bookworms book club meets virtually weekly after school. The students choose a book to read monthly from a curated list of Black authors and other POC (People of Color) writers. This month students voted on reading, The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. We will have lessons related to the book about racism, colorism and activities that would highlight African American history.

It means a lot to the students when they can expand their personal libraries.

It also means a lot to them to read books where they can see themselves represented.
