This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a Title One school. A very high percentage the students live in poverty. They come to school with anxiety, hunger, and distractions. In school, however, they flourish. Truly a family, all students feel safe, loved, and heard. I teach second grade at this wonderfully unique, opened space (no walls) school.

Right now my students are striving to increase their independent reading stamina.

They have set a SMART goal and are anxious to meet and exceed it! An inviting, exciting classroom library would surely help! Oh....and we sure could use a functioning pencil sharpener when it's time to respond to our reading!

My Project

Just as basketball player needs dribbling skills and a scientist needs process skills, a reader needs fluency and comprehension skills. Independent Reading Time provides my students the opportunity to practice the skills they have learned during guided instruction. A classroom library stocked with books that are high interest and engaging draws students in and makes them want to practice. Reading shifts from being something they are required to do, to something they look forward to doing.

The books I have carefully selected for this project are ones that I know my student will love diving into.

From funny books like Captain Underpants, to standards- based books like Water Habitats, to series books like Owl Diaries, there is something for all my students.

Going to exciting places is not always possible for our hard working families. This important project will provide my students with books that will take them on amazing adventures!

Of course even Independent Reading Time has an accountability piece. Students respond to their reading every day in their Reading Response Journals. Although it seems like such a little thing, a nice sharp pencil goes a long way in showing pride and effort in this journal. We really need a sharpener that can stand up to our appetite for writing in our journals!
