I teach ten 3rd grade students in a self-contained special education class who are all diagnosed with an Emotional Impairment.

Our school is in an urban city and many of our students come from a lack of stability and supportive home lives. Our goal is to provide a safe and exciting learning environment as well as the motivation and encouragement our students need and deserve. Please help me give them this opportunity by encouraging their desire to learn more!

My Project

A few months ago I let one of my students venture to the school's book closet with me to choose our next guided reading book. The student chose The Land of the Lost from the Secrets of Droon collection. I had never heard of the book but figured I'd let it fly since all of my choices were putting the class to sleep.

This student made a major breakthrough in my reading groups.

My class was immediately hooked on this book and even begged to read through recess some days. I have been in search of more books in this series as my students can't stop talking about how much this book changed their outlook on reading. It finally helped them realize that books really can take you anywhere!
