Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students at our school are getting ready to go to and through college. One of the biggest challenges we face in our 5th grade class, is that many students come in at various reading levels and don't know how to pick or dig into a good book. I want to change that this year!

My students live in a low-income area with the majority qualify for the Free-and-Reduced-Lunch plan.

Because family and financial challenges outside of school impact many of their attitudes towards their education, I work hard to be as positive and supportive as possible. Despite all of this, the students come in with great attitudes and a willingness to learn that drives me daily to be a great teacher. Therefore, I try my best to create a warm and inviting environment for every student.

My Project

The students have long blocks of reading time daily. Our school does a silent 30 minutes of reading to start our day, and in our 5th grade ELA class, they will eventually have up to 40 minutes of independent reading time. The purpose of this project is to fill our class library with enough books at as many levels as possible. With the varied leveled reading books the students can select books on their individual reading needs and improve their literacy. They can also work independently using the various reading strategies they learn and review in class daily.

This donation will mean so much to our class library.

It is hard for many of my students to get to a library on a regular basis, and by having access to all these new and exciting books, they won't have a reason to shy away from experiencing new authors or stories!
