My Project
As a Reading Specialist, with four interventionalists on my team, we work to increase students' knowledge and confidence in reading via small group instruction. We work with grades K-5. In a small group setting, we're able to truly see our students' personalities shine. This kind of setting also allows us to identify individual needs and make attempts at closing identified gaps. Research indicates that approximately 60-70% of elementary students in low-income regions struggle with literacy. These students often face significant barriers such as limited access to resources, less exposure to early literacy experiences, and fewer educational supports.
In addition national statistics show that around 4 children in EVERY classroom may be dealing with dyslexia.
This project includes tools to support these, and other struggling, learners.
1. Wearable finger highlighters and reading rulers with colored overlays can help children focus on one line of text at a time, reducing visual distractions and easing tracking difficulties.
2. Whisper phones help kids learn to read by providing auditory feedback, allowing them to hear their own voice clearly while reading aloud, which can improve their pronunciation and fluency. The isolated sound environment reduces distractions and helps them focus on the text.
3. Mirrors help students see the correct mouth and tongue position for each sound.
4. Alphabet fidget poppers can enhance cognitive development while simultaneously providing sensory stimulation.
5. LCD and dry erase boards are included because writing is essential in learning to read because it reinforces the connection between letters, sounds, and words, helping to solidify phonemic awareness and letter recognition. By practicing writing, learners develop fine motor skills and gain a deeper understanding of the structure of language, which supports their ability to decode and comprehend text.
6. Sand timers assist students in visually monitoring their decoding fluency.
