This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You may have heard that reading is power. Well, that is what I want to give my students, the power to succeed in school. Reading entails a variety of skills from decoding, word analysis, and comprehension. My students come to school one or two years below grade level at no fault of their own.
My students live in the inner city.
Their neighborhood is mostly made up of factories. One block away from school homeless people camp out to receive their meals from the local soup kitchen. Poverty is evident all around. Students lack basic essentials such as books, school materials and decent living spaces. Yet, every day they come to school eager to learn and succeed.
My Project
My students need these vocabulary building skills activities such as Antonyms Listening Center Pack, Reading Skills Fluency Pack and Listen and Read Fluency Pack to build a strong foundation for reading. I am requesting a variety of hands-on manipulative that will help my students learn about synonyms and antonyms. In addition some of the materials requested will help students fluency and comprehension. These materials will be used on a daily basis to enhance and facilitate the learning of the essential skills needed to be a successful reader.
This project is very important to my students because the materials requested will help my students acquire the grade level skills necessary to be successful readers and learners.
Second Grade is the grade where students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. I want my students to be ready to learn from readings. I want them to have the power of reading.
