My Students

This diverse group of middle school students come from different backgrounds and experiences who are excited and eager to learn, but reading isn't always their favorite thing to do. Many students struggle to complete books independently.

Our goal is to build a community of readers.

My students are struggling readers who read below their academic level. We need high-interest, engaging books that are just as diverse as the students. Thus, allowing them to connect to the characters in the books.

My Project

Multiple copies of diverse text will allow students to support each other in a shared reading experience. High-interest, engaging books will promote independent reading.

Using verse novels in the classroom will inspire struggling reluctant readers, build reading stamina, and increase comprehension.

These books will also allow for student-directed book clubs in order to develop and strengthen speaking and listening skills. Student reading blogs will be used to demonstrate comprehension and critical thinking of their independent reading.

Novels in verse are becoming popular among preteens. Due to the structure of the text, they appear less intimidating and allows for student success.
