My special education students will have the opportunity to review sound skills previously learned by using these decodable readers. Decodable readers are simply illustrated stories containing only words that can be sounded out using the previous and current sound concepts taught. Decodable readers allow learners to practice reading skills without being bogged down with words they are not expected to know yet.
Struggling readers need more exposure and practice to find reading success.
Research has shown that learners need exposure and practice of a skill over 40 times before it becomes more automatic. By providing decodable reading stories to practice sound concepts taught in my reading intervention class, you will be giving these children a dose of extra reading review.
Children that struggle with reading have a deep desire to improve their skills. I am always looking for options to provide just the right materials that will lead to improved reading skills and of course more confidence!
If you were to drop by my reading resource room, you would hear excited voices reading stories on their level that can be sounded out or decoded with little help. Over time, this reading practice will boost their self-esteem as they prove to themselves they have the ability to be a great reader. Nothing beats that smile when a student sees his hard work pay off!
