My students need various reading comprehension materials to make reading fun! They need games, short passages to read, and sticky notes and labels to record responses.

My Students
"Whatever the struggle, continue the climb. It may be only one step to the summit,"- Diane Westlake said, and my students need the motivation to help them continue the climb in literacy. The hands-on literacy materials will make mastering reading skills seem like less of a struggle.
My students are one to two grade levels behind in their reading and writing skills.
Our school is in a high poverty area, and recently has benefited from a Race to the Top grant for school improvement - but we still have a lot of work to do! Many of my students are facing disabilities, limited English, ADHD and various other challenges that make learning to read in English more difficult for them. By fourth grade, if reading is still not easy, it is tempting to give up. However, they have limitless abilities if they can gain the motivation and the skills to overcome the many obstacles they are facing. With your help, I can provide my students with tangible opportunities to hone their literacy skills and become lifelong readers and scholars.
My Project
I am requesting various hands-on literacy skill and strategy games and materials to help make reading more concrete and more fun for my students. They will be able to practice summarizing and finding the main idea - both very important skills with the new common core - using dice and wheels instead of pencils and paper. They will also be able to read Time for Kids - engaging nonfiction - on a reading level they are able to access. These magazines will help them hone their nonfiction reading skills and they will be able to take them home to continue reading. Students will also be able to use colorful post-it notes to track their predictions, questions, connections, and summaries. This is much more fun than using paper, and they are able to share their thoughts easily with the entire class. With these materials, reading will be a much more hands-on, collaborative process!
4th grade is when students have to begin reading to learn, instead of just learning to read.
For my students, who haven't quite mastered all the mechanics of reading yet, we have to do BOTH this year in order to prepare them for future success. I want this hard work to be as fun and engaging as possible so that my students can buy into this challenging task. With these materials, you will help me give my students skills that will last a lifetime!
