"The expert in anything was once the beginner" anonymous. All of my students would like to become reading experts and need quality materials that are diverse to support them in this endeavor. They have access to great fiction, but really want to have the same opportunity in non-fiction and poetry!
I have a wonderful heterogeneous group of sixth graders in a small town.
They greet each day ready to learn with smiles on their faces. They are excited to learn about new places and to try out and learn new skills. I am truly thrilled with the effort and excitement that they bring to their learning. When assigned a task they will sit down and think about it, work collaboratively to solve it, and check in with each others learning. Not only that, they are kind and patient with each other. Supportive to everyone, being respectful of the learning difficulties that some have. This patience is evident in their everyday interaction. Being in elementary they carry this down to the younger grades as well, modeling what the expectation is for them. What a great bunch of students!
My Project
These students are bright and capable, but need materials that will provide the enrichment and challenge. My students will use the magazine subscription to Scholastic Scope to further their ability to develop and craft good reading responses. They will use them to learn how to cite text from non-fiction sources, to analyze character development in plays and to interpret author meaning in poetry.
This donation will allow my students to further their learning.
By funding this project you will give them an opportunity to have access to rich resources they would otherwise not have. My class will be able to learn about places, current events, rich literature that is specially designed for them. They will be given activities and projects that will help them become stronger readers that read more closely to the text.
