Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are eager learners from diverse cultural, racial, and linguistic backgrounds. They spend there days trying to navigate their way not only through first grade, but through a dual language immersion program as well. They are ready to learn and need motivation to work hard, take risks, and grow as learners.

Covid-19 made learning difficult for early education students.

So much of Kindergarten and 1st Grade learning is hands on. It needs the constant support and feedback of qualified teachers. This support was difficult with the remote learning model. The students came with significant learning gaps and we've been working hard to catch up. Access to early reading materials presented one of the most significant challenges during online learning.

I teach at urban school in Salt Lake City where most of the students are on free or reduced lunch and the school is gathering place for the community. My students need opportunities to build their reading and writing skills, build background knowledge, access the arts, and be brave as they take on new challenges.

My Project

The transition back to school has been a difficult one as students must overcome significant academic gaps while also learning how to be in school generally. They need practice in creative thinking, cooperation, and following directions. Art has been an important and fun way for them to learn to follow directions, be creative, and express themselves in new ways. Art projects are often tied to trade book read alouds as well as other curriculum areas like literacy and science. The art supplies will help continue and expand the art we can do in the classroom. The leveled readers will help support early reading and phonics skills.
