My Students

Do you remember the first book that you ever got lost in? As a reading teacher, it is my job to find books that all students are interested in, and ignite their love for reading. Some fresh books would be the spark they need!

I teach 120 fifth and sixth grade students at a fine arts school in Chicago, Illinois.

My students are very bright, and they have very diverse learning styles and interests. In my classroom the students have the opportunity to participate in reading centers, reader's theater, literature circles, and they also create projects to share with the class. I am always looking for new and exciting activities to keep the interest of my students.

My Project

The first selection of books that I have chosen will be used for literature circles. Students are grouped based on their ability level, and I provide them with books that they read and discuss within these groups.Due to the lack of funding, the books that we are able to choose from for literature circles are very outdated and over used. Many of my students have read these books in previous classes, and I would like to provide them with a refreshing selection of books that they are interested in reading. These books will be added to the school selection, and will be available for all teachers at my school to use. The second selection will be used to fill the empty shelves in my classroom library. As a second year teacher, I have inherited some books for my library, but I would like to provide my students with some fresh choices that will meet their interests. Many of my students can not purchase books on their own. I would like to give all of my students the opportunity read a new book.

Do you remember when you were in middle school and you had to read the "boring books" that the teachers provided you with?

That is the struggle that I am facing in my classroom today. It is my goal to help my students get lost in a good book whether it be something they choose, or something I choose for them. I hope to ignite the spark that I know all students have for reading, and you can help! Thank you for supporting teachers, and remember... Reading Rocks!
