This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand."-the author of this quote is unknown, but my students know the sentiment expressed here very well. Kids need to discover things themselves in order to truly comprehend the academics we are trying to teach them.
My students are a precocious bunch.
They attend school in an area of low economic development, but they are rich in motivation, an eagerness to learn and a great sense of humor. They have already been identified as Gifted and Talented but still often struggle in terms of academics. Some are learning English as a second language. They have wonderful parents who often help them at home, if given the tools to do so. They keep me on my toes daily, but I wouldn't have it any other way!
My Project
I am requesting some hands-on resources to help bolster the reading skills of my students. Many are emerging readers and already have a passion for books, but we need to work on the academic skills necessary for them to comprehend what they are reading. Every day the students work in workstations while I pull students to work individually with me or in a small group. We need some fresh activities for the students to work on at that time. They need to manipulate tiles, to move around and be able to discuss the discoveries they are making with words.
Your gift would make such a difference for my students!
A strong foundation in reading will serve them the rest of their lives. They have to read in science, math, social studies, everywhere. If they have mastered these basic reading skills, they are well on their way to a bright future. These kiddos are willing to work, they just need the tools to help them better their skills. They would be so grateful!
