This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when reading suddenly just "clicked" for you? My first graders are eager to experience this feeling, and some of them need just a little help to get there!
I teach first grade in an urban school in northern Illinois.
My students come from a neighborhood with high poverty and crime rates. The majority of my students are English Language Learners, and often hear and speak English only at school. Often, their parents are unable to help with homework. Despite some of these obstacles, these children are excited to learn and become better readers.
My Project
The phonics and vocabulary games and puzzles I have selected will be part of our Word Work center, which is available to students daily. The goal of this center is to provide necessary practice in phonics and word use. These activities are differentiated, addressing basic letter and sound correspondence and rhyming words for my struggling readers, and vocabulary skills for my more advanced students. Each activity lends itself well to individual and small-group work, so students may either work with me on the activity for more intensive support, or practice independently or with a peer to maintain skills. And best of all, these activities are fun and engaging games that will keep my students learning for many days to come.
By donating to this project, you will help build strong, confident readers this year and for many years to come.
Students will get the necessary support they need to succeed as readers, while having fun doing so.
