Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I call them my Super Stars. The reason could have been because it goes well with my last name, but really it is because my students are Super Stars. I tell them that and they believe it. They also know that Super Stars read and readers need books.
My students come into school every day eager to learn something new.
We are one of five kindergarten classrooms in a Title I school with close to 600 students. I currently have 18 students. The majority of my students are English Language Learners who need additional materials to support learning new vocabulary and skills simultaneously.
Many people have said that our school is a hidden treasure and for that reason it can be difficult to locate. Because we are tucked into a small neighborhood, we do not receive as much community support to fund classroom needs. Many of our teachers purchase materials independently or seek funding for materials.
My Project
My class is in need of several math books on counting groups and comparing two groups with more than and less than. Some of the big books will also help with counting while others will support the students with rhyming, character education, and developing stories as writers.
For my students to continue developing as super stars, they need these books to support their goals. I have found two great advantages to using big books. One is all of the students can see the words and pictures at the same time. The second is that the students can go back and read the books at our large-group meeting area. I want them to re-read these books so they can check their understanding.
Your donation gives my super stars another opportunity to learn while using books as their tools.
Thank you for considering my books project as you decide which project to support.
