This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently teach in a Title I school located in a low socioeconomic area of Orlando, Florida. 100 percent of students receive free lunch and over 80 percent are English as a Second language learners. I currently have students from over ten different countries. Many are coming to this country after having traumatic experiences in their home country and are living with family members other than their parents. Regardless of these circumstances, my students are hardworking and eager to learn. School is a safe place for them.

My Project

The reading resource materials will help my students practice and develop their foundational reading skills such as rhyming, identifying letters, identifying letter sounds, reading words with different sound patterns, comprehension, identifying syllables in words and sight word recognition. They will use these resources in small groups and collaborative structures. Students will be able to build words using sounds and listen to books on tape in order to to build fluency as well listening comprehension. Part of developing oral reading fluency is to have it modeled. Hearing authors read with prosody will help them decode and establish new sight words. To help our new students from Puerto Rico adjust to the classroom, I want to provide a place where my students can "wiggle" as they learn. I plan to use these awesome chairs at the computer center as a way to release energy as they multitask. The seat sacks are to help my students feel the power of building responsibility for their belongings. Far too often materials go unnoticed...well, not anymore! Students will be excited and engaged when participating in these tactile and listening activities which can only enhance their ability to read. Learning to read and comprehend what we read is a quintessential life skill that translates all subject areas and professions.
