Our students love to read! Using the Orff Method in the Music Room opens the door to so many possibilities through Singing, Speaking, Moving, and Playing. Combining this musical method with literacy takes our students a step forward in creativity. I am ready to keep my students excited about reading with a group reading and rhyming session with the book Simon B. Rhymin’. Students will use musical instruments in collaboration with theater to bring this book to life. We will also use music notes to break down unknown words for syllable practice. For example, a quarter note makes one beat of sound. Therefore, students can connect that to a one-syllable word such as a dog. My students are overflowing with musical creativity, and I can't wait to show them how to apply the same creativity to their reading.
This classroom set of books will help develop literacy in and out of the music room in a cross-curricular fashion.
It will also spark creativity in how to act out or rhyme while reading or listening to the story. Students will also have the opportunity to bring this project-based learning activity to life by making all the theatrical decisions. This allows us to break down the story a bit more and also gives them some STAAR prep in a fun way. Literacy is the first step to becoming the President and I want to make sure that all my future Presidents are musical in every way.
