Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are the definition of high needs. In our school, 25% of our students are homeless and 80% receive free/reduced lunch. My students live in a primarily Hispanic community and often are not exposed to the city outside of their neighborhood. Coming from Spanish speaking homes, students struggle in literacy in both languages. Our high school serves as a community gathering place in the neighborhood and it brings a lot of pride to the community.

My students have major learning gaps and read at an early elementary level.

Our goal is to grow at least two reading levels in a year.

My Project

I'm a part of a special team that is helping low readers grow in high school. Our students are reading at an elementary level while in high school, and as predicted are struggling in their classes. Our intervention will help to get kids moving up and eventually be reading at their grade level. This is difficult work for teachers and students, and we want to reward their progress.

I picked a variety of fun rewards for our low readers.

When readers grow and move up a level, students will get to pick from a trove of special reading materials. I've picked bookmarks, stickers, and other goodies that will keep our kids encouraged and moving up.
