This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am the proud teacher of a 12:1 self-contained class. My students come with learning, language, and behavioral challenges.
This summer, I've had the opportunity to do extensive research on the skills and elements necessary for becoming a proficient reader.
Reading English is a complex learned skill; it does not come naturally. These phonics kits provide effective and efficient multi sensory instruction to ensure that a student learns all phonetic skills necessary to become a skilled reader.
My Project
I teach in the one of the highest poverty areas in our nation.
All children, despite their circumstances can become skilled readers.
Despite their economic hardships, my students come to school eager and ready to learn. They are bright, curious, and inquisitive children. I teach in a 12:1 classroom where all students have IEP. Many of my students have Dyslexia, ADHD, and expressive/receptive language deficits.
Here's the good news! Despite economic hardships, having a disability or being an English Language Learner, all children learn to read based on two simple components: Decoding X Language Comprehension. If students struggle to decode words, comprehension is nearly impossible. Students must be taught to expertly decode words automatically.
There is hope!
The 95% Group offers kits that enable a teacher to explicitly teach decoding skills though multi-sensory instruction. The kits enable the students to master the phonological skills necessary to improve reading comprehension. If we as teachers do not explicitly teach students the full phonological code (multiple vowel sounds, consonant diagraphs, vowel-combinations, controlled vowels, and other complexities in printed words), it will be difficult for them to "catch up" and become a skilled reader. Please help me to close the educational gap.
