My Students
Our school is an amazing place. Every year, we are among the top 5% of Seattle Schools for student academic growth per year. Our students overcome all kinds of obstacles - poverty, racism, learning English (most of our families don't speak English at home). It's an amazing school and I am grateful every day for getting to be a tiny part of it.
I teach beginning middle school Spanish.
My class has everything from kids who don't know a word of Spanish to totally fluent native speakers who just need to practice spelling and formal grammar. I want to be able to meet ALL their needs, so this means having materials for them at a very wide range of skill levels.
My Project
This year I'm trying hard to use our textbook LESS and get them reading real books, watching video of native speakers, etc. Less textbook and more authentic experiences!
I want a collection of REAL books in Spanish for my students.
My native speakers need harder books to read. My kids new to Spanish need picture books for learning new vocabulary and they need books in Spanish that they already have read in English to work on decoding familiar stories. Graphic novels are another fabulous resource - kids struggling with the language can get tons of clues from the pictures that help them decode the text.
