Help me give my students a taste of the first novel in the amazing Margaret Peterson Haddix's Among The Hidden Series. Our small guided reading and larger, shared reading groups will enjoy these texts for years to come.
My diverse group of fifth grade students have one foot firmly planted in childhood, as they tentatively place another into their futures. The more I can actively engage them, the more they see education as an important step in the paths they are taking. Junior high and high school are right around the corner, and we know sparking an interest early is important. Having the right materials to support their active learning and engagement is a critical part of that process.
My Project
As part of our 5th grade core curriculum, we study U.S. History. I have found that every level of student loves the "I Survived" series. Gettysburg directly ties to our social studies units. This cross-curricular text will be used in small guided reading groups.
The next text allows us to discuss the power of one and various government systems while wetting their appetite to read more.
Class shared reading will include the first book in a series, Among The Hidden. I love watching my students read this book and seek out the rest of the series on their own.
Finally, have the audio for Roald Dahls's Fantastic Mr. Fox, but I don't have the book. My English Language Learners and students with special needs will benefit from reading the text and then hearing it again, allowing them time to process what they have read.
