My students need a variety of ways to access interesting text that is on grade level which include 27 magazine subscriptions and 12 various audio books.

My Students
Each student has a unique way of approaching and engaging in text. In order to support each student there needs to be various texts available to them. By supplying different texts and audio books to these fantastic first grade students, they will have a higher chance of being successful readers.
My students come from a low-income community in Baltimore City.
These students are thrilled about reading and working with words as we do every morning during reading workshop. Our school community is working hard to engage students in rigorous work that matches or exceeds the work in their more affluent neighboring classrooms. Each student has a different interest and are always talking about what they want to be when they grow up. Everything from teacher to race car driver, these students understand the importance of a good education and are excited to learn.
My Project
The magazine subscription and audio books will help to make our reading workshop even more comprehensive. Currently, our listening center is supplied with musical Cd's that is way below these first graders' comprehension and reading level. They are looking for more rigorous work to keep their brains growing. Also, we are constantly discussing articles and nonfiction informational sources but have no magazines available to us. It is difficult to speak of something and learn from it without copies in your hand. The magazine subscription will help students to solidify their understanding of a magazine and it's importance in the world of informational text.
This first grade project is important because it will help to diversify our classroom library and the resources available to us during reading workshop and beyond.
It will help to engage students that are looking for new ways to gain information.
