My Students
My students are smart, energetic, and creative. My fifth graders are preparing for middle school.
They have varied learning and behavior needs and I try to engage them through different activities.
They’re currently rounding decimals, learning to write opinion essays, and learning about cells.
My Project
Imagine my students becoming entranced during independent reading time; they’ll get to choose to learn about Haiti after the earthquake, Chinese cultural traditions, read about famous African Americans and so much more.
I am looking to provide my students with diverse book choices so that all students feel represented in the classroom.
You would be donating to a class of bright fifth graders who are falling in love with reading.
In 1985, less than 1 percent of children’s books spotlighted Black characters. Twenty years later, not much had changed. In 2015, children were about five times more likely to encounter a talking truck or dinosaur on the page than a Hispanic character.
I don’t want to create more reluctant readers by not letting them see themselves in the books.
