I teach 7th grade language arts in a public school. We have inclusion of special needs and gifted students in all classes. Our school has a 30% poverty rate. Many students do not have books or reading materials at home.
Why don't kids read? After doing many surveys and conferencing with students, I found that many books in our school library are not available or interesting to students. When I found out what kids were interested in, I was able to buy books that matched those interests.
I need help buying books for my classroom library. I spent a few thousand dollars on books last year. It was worth it but I cannot continue to run up my credit card like this again. High-interest books are expensive and the costs adds up. I let the students sign out whatever book they like. Kids like not having a due date and actually seem to read more quickly from my library. Not one student lost a book last year. Very impressive!
PLEASE help my students continue to read. Reading helps kids improve in every area of the curriculum and life. I can't think of anything more important than instilling a love of reading in another person. It is a priceless gift.
