There is never a dull moment in my classroom with the bright, funny, creative individuals I have the pleasure of teaching. My students are in a self-contained middle school special education classroom for students with a variety of disabilities that make it difficult for them to access their grade-level academics. Each child has an individual education plan to help them make progress on goals in academics, social skills, communication, and functional life skills. About 1/3 of my students speak English as a second language and every student works significantly below their grade level in all academic areas.
My students love to come to school and it is my joy to get to be their teacher.
They are very hard workers and try their best to grow and learn in every subject. They are full of curiosity, energy, and incredible potential. We try to always focus on the positive and celebrate every success that our students achieve. Every day we do our best to make sure that our students have the necessary tools they need to succeed, but it's not easy when you have a small classroom budget per year in a high-poverty school.
My Project
I am trying to keep my students motivated and engaged in learning from home. A few months have passed and my students are doing a phenomenal job in learning with this new way through a pandemic. My students are always asking for new activities and websites. There are many programs on the web but they all come with a fee. Resources are limited and therefore, children have limited access.
All of our students struggle with reading and this affects their learning across all academic areas.
A Reading Plus subscription would give our students adaptable reading instruction that could be utilized in both online and in-person learning environments. Students need an independent model that adapts to each of their individualistic learning needs. This Reading Plus subscription would allow us to implement a platform that creates an individualized work plan for each student that can be shared with parents. Having this individualized reading program would support students, parents, and the teacher in maximizing each students’ reading capabilities.
