This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten at Tenderloin Community School in San Francisco. Kindergarten reading standards include learning the first twenty sight words. We learn these words in many different ways in the classroom toward the end of the academic year students become able to read more words and need to have more experiences with reading books.
I would like to have more whole sets of readers that emphasize the first 20 sight words that we learn in kindergarten.(words like : like, my, I ,and see). This will help students learn sight words while having a successful reading experience which in turn will promote more reading and enjoyment of reading.
We would use these books to read in small groups of 5 with an adult helping each group.
I would like to find several sets of 5 books each that use sight words and have engaging themes preferably in science and social studies genres.
My students would benefit from these books because they will feel excited by being able to read and understand. They will also benefit from the small group instruction made possible by the books.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
