We are at a low-income school and I am a beginning teacher. My class, as well as grade, is a vibrant group of hard-working and dedicated second graders. They pride themselves on being more than ready for third grade. We are now in the village of trailers at our school. This does not stop us! We are more eager than ever to learn all we can. This year we will introduce flex seating to appeal to all learning types. This also holds true to the second grade as a whole.
Many of my students tell me they do not have access to books or hands-on experiences at home and reading and experiencing is achieving.
We must reach for the stars! Each child is unique in many ways and their needs for a successful education follow.
We are at different levels of learning and we learn best with tactile items as well as other visuals. I want nothing more than to see them continue to strive in the best environment I can provide them.
My Project
In the journey looking at global literacy and twenty-first-century standards, we will tie together literacy and social studies using bilingual picture books. We will be doing independent, small group and whole group learning. Some languages we will be looking at will be Spanish, French, Japanese, German, Latin, Hawaiian, Cherokee, and more.
Through independent and group reading we will travel the world through picture books.
Furthering the learning to virtual field trips to the places we read about. Some students do not get to see outside their neighborhood and this is a way to travel the world through education.
