My students need just right chapter books that are age appropriate for first graders, book bins to store our new books, Toobaloos to practice reading fluently, and iPad styluses to write about books on iPads.
First grade is an exciting year for children that is filled with lots of learning and growth! My classroom is a fun, vibrant place where children make huge gains both academically and socially throughout the year!
My students are eager and excited to learn every day at school!
Teaching is such an exciting adventure because no two days are ever the same! The 6 and 7-year-old boys and girls I teach have very diverse cultural, economic, academic, language, and emotional needs. My school is a fantastic place where the students meet every day to learn with and from one another! My students work hard every day at school to become better readers, writers, thinkers, and learners...providing the classroom resources to help them strengthen their skills provides endless benefits!
My Project
The beginner chapter books I've requested for this project are filled with favorite characters that first graders LOVE! An expanded library in our classroom will allow these books to be read by many students, and to be kept in the reading boxes that first graders use each day! Classroom library baskets will be spread out around our entire classroom to showcase the importance of reading! An abundant classroom library will not only encourage students to choose books they enjoy, but will also motivate them to read other books in the same series.
The best way for children to become better readers is to practice, practice, PRACTICE!
When students read independently, it is important for them to be able to HEAR themselves as readers. This is where the Toobaloos come in! Using a Toobaloo, children will be able to hear themselves read and will be able to practice reading with fluency, pauses, and expression.
Finally, students will use the iPad styluses to write their thoughts about the book they've read on our iPads. Students publish their thoughts using a digital portfolio platform that can be shared with families and other students.
