My students need a new classroom book set of one of the novels we use for book studies. This book study integrates our social studies standards with our reading standards.

My Students
I teach 4th grade in rural South Carolina. Many of my students have limited resources at home to books and lack a literacy rich environment at home. My classroom places a strong emphasis on independent reading in which students have voice and choice in their selections. We also participate in novel studies which are integrated with our Social Studies standards. It is my unwavering belief that instilling a love of reading in my students is the key upon which all other academic success hinges.
“There is no such thing as a child who hates to read; there are only children who have not found the right book.”
― Frank Serafini.
It is my desire that my students take ownership of their learning. My hope as their teacher is that they will deepen their understanding of curriculum as they investigate through many mediums, one of which is literature.
My Project
“All that mankind has done, thought, gained, or been; it is lying as in magic preservation in the pages of books.”
― Thomas Carlyle
Immersing ourselves in the lives of the characters in these historical fiction books is an outstanding way to make connections with our past. The Sign of a Beaver is the title I am requesting. Students will improve reading and comprehension skills while getting a first person perspective on some of the most important periods of American History. Integrating Social Studies with Language Arts is a beautiful way to add authenticity to our learning. This novels study will bridge history lessons with an understanding of what life would have been like in these times and circumstances.
