Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are curious, action-oriented, and brave, taking on the complexities of health disparities with curiosity and creativity. They are bravely navigating their teenage years in the chaotic and often scary face of a global pandemic. Adapting to this during the already intense experience of puberty and adolescence is unique and challenging.

Health Class is a year-long experience where students gain foundational knowledge of public health through an equity lens at our culturally, racially, and linguistically diverse urban high school.

All 9th graders take this course, and they tackle topics such as nutrition, consent, sexual health, youth healthcare rights, reproductive justice, mental health, violence prevention, and beyond. They develop practical skills through CPR and First Aid training, communication workshops, and harm reduction response techniques.

My Project

My students work in small groups for many of their projects and always ask to read books together. Please help make this a reality for my 9th - 12th-grade students.

This collection of books is a student-chosen list to represent the offerings of BiPOC authors who they (my students) look up to.

This curated list is intended to be the starting point for our discussions of ableism, trans history, medical ethics, supporting black futures, and more.

As a teacher, this student-initiated wide reading is my dream. Let's make this magic happen for them, especially in a year when, due to the pandemic, so much of their magic has been dampened.
