My Students
We are an inquisitive, fun, smart, and excited community of learners. We are diverse in every sense of the word - culturally, economically, racially, linguistically. Our school was rated one of the most diverse schools in Oakland, pulling from many socioeconomic levels. We are proud of our cooperation and support of the children. We come together in the classroom to create a common learning community.
We need paper books now, more than ever, in this time of technology based distance learning!
We exist online competently (our district is based on Google Drive accounts and Chromebooks) but our minds and eyes need paper books to deepen literacy and learn about our world.
My Project
The most difficult parts of Distance Learning are the amount of screen time we do, and the lack of motivation that can come as an emotional reaction to this circumstance. In response, I designed reading, writing and social studies units that tie together around amazing works of fiction. We learn about people and times through literature and stories that hook us. The stories give us relatable people and teach us about history in a way we can't put down and always have much to say about.
Reading paper books, we hold in our hands, that are amazing works of fiction, motivate us and teach us.
This project allows us to have our focus book in students' hands to take us on the journey each book brings. We write, we talk, we read and we learn about ourselves our world and history. When the focus book is in our hands, we read and re-read and become motivated to learn.
I made sure to pick truly amazing works that are historical fiction and social issues focused fiction. I also made sure to choose works that children love. This way we share a love of reading and motivate ourselves to learn writing as we speak about what is authentic inside of us.
