This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My school is a Title l distinguished school, and 90% of the school population receives free/reduced-price lunch. We currently have Breakfast-in-the-Classroom to provide food for those students whose families are struggling financially. My classroom consists of students with intellectual disabilities - ADHD, Asperger's, Autism, SLD.
My students ages range from age 5-10 and are eager readers, who enjoy checking out books from our classroom library.
They especially love book collections, because they are able to engage and immerse themselves into the story beyond just one book! Students with intellectual disabilities NEED a print-rich classroom and more books to help them access not only the reading curriculum, but also the world around them.
My Project
As adults, didn't we love reading book collections from the classic Chronicles of Narnia, Nancy Drew, and Hardy Boys Series, the Boxcar Children, and maybe even the Harry Potter collection? My students are especially in love with book collections, because they are able to go on a journey with the characters from the books beyond one story. My classroom library is a place my students look forward to spending time in. Students are able to enjoy chapter books, nonfiction books, and more books of their choice. My students love to have books read to them, read independently, and even check them out to take home so they can show off their reading skills and knowledge to their friends and family!
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books at their own independent reading level, as well as, their personal interests.
Bringing a diversity of book collections into my classroom library, also helps me provide more reading opportunities for students to cultivate their joy and pleasure in leisure reading.
