Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students live in a very low income urban area and attend a Title I school where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Many of my students do not have computers, tablets, or internet access at home and do not have the means to obtain access to online tools that promote learning in all subject areas. Many of my students' parents are not literate, which means that in most cases, the only reading and writing supports my students receive are here at school. My school's budget allows for desks, chairs, and (on occasion) paper, pencils, and basic office supplies. Teachers at my school must provide any additional furnishings, learning tools/supports (such as manipulatives and games), as well as technology for their individual classrooms.
My Project
Last year, our classroom library rug was donated by a local hardware store. Unfortunately, it was damaged by mice over the summer while in storage. This year, we don't have a rug in the classroom and students either sit on the tile floor or on storage containers. Most students choose to return to their seats instead of lingering in the library area to read or play games. With a new library rug, students will have an inviting and comfortable place to sit to enjoy both academic and recess activities. I would love your help to create a space in the room that allows for the entire classroom community to come together for meeting circles, read-alouds, games, and personal reading. A new rug will entice students to spend more time in the library and emphasize the importance of literacy both as an channel for learning and a treasured pastime.
