Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Becoming an individual, building empathy, learning about contemporary global issues - these are often the topics of high-interest texts written for adolescents as they begin to form their own identities and determine their place in the world. Unfortunately, my students do not have access to these pivotal, young adult texts.

My 9th grade students attend an urban, high-poverty, predominately Latino public school outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

My inquisitive and insightful students have had few opportunities to experience new worlds outside their own or outside the realm of social media. I want to teach my students that they can enjoy reading, learn from the texts they read, and be part of a larger community of readers all at the same time.

My Project

My students will be reading books of varying genres and competing in a public event in which they answer questions about the book for the school and families to enjoy. I'm requesting copies of Eleanor & Park, I Am Malala, Always Running La Vida Loca, Speak, Sold, The Book Thief, and Uglies.

With these books received from this project, students will have the opportunity to engage in book talks with their peers throughout the remainder of the year.

The purpose of the project is to help students to enjoy reading, but also to help them recognize that reading creates a sense of community; and, by talking about and sharing books, they will be able to share in experiences outside of the world in which they live.

The students will also take part in a community event where they get to talk about the books and showcase what they've learned in front of their teachers, friends, and families.
