I teach an AMAZING group of students in a Title I school in North Carolina. Most of them qualify for free meals. They are great kids who actively participate in school activities and are anxious to learn new things. My greatest wish is to give my students everything they need to keep them encouraged.
One of America's greatest children's author, Dr. Seuss once said, "The more that you READ the more things you will know, the more that you LEARN, the more places you'll go!" Even though my students are staying home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, they can "go places" through great literature.
My Project
I was always taught that the best way to improve reading is to be an active reader. Because of that lesson, I developed a love for reading at an early age, and I have shared this love for reading with my students. I have asked my students to read for at least twenty minutes each day. Thus, they choose books and read for enjoyment every day. However, with schools and libraries closed, my students do not have access to books.
Because of remote learning, students are spending a lot of time accessing live instruction and completing independent learning activities via computers.
Therefore, having hard copies of books will allow my students to continue their love for reading while reducing screen time. The books that I am requesting for my students will be delivered to their homes. They will serve the dual purposes of reading for fun, while improving reading.
