My students need 42 copies of "Marcelo in the Real World" for a whole class study, and 3 other novels for book groups, to compliment other texts we will be studying in an exploration of using voice for power in society.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Has there ever been a time in your life when you felt like no one was listening to you? This is a challenge my students face often and through an exploration of literature that shows how individuals and groups can make their voice heard and feel empowered.
My students are a diverse group of 11th and 12th graders who have faced a variety of obstacles and still have a commitment to their own learning and growth.
I find my students to be a great source of inspiration as they really approach their learning with passion which challenges me to keep the curriculum engaging. Our school is a small public school that strives to build a safe and college prep environment for all.
My Project
The books I am requesting will help fill in gaps in a class where we explore how people who are often considered "outsiders" in society can find voice and be empowered. In addition to already reading Their Eyes were Watching God and Lakota Woman, we would be able to add Marcelo in the Real World as a whole class text. This is a powerful novel about an autistic teenage boy who is often challenged by others and people try to take advantage of him, but in the end he finds his voice and power and others are able to see a larger world because of him. The other texts are for books groups. Parable of the Sower is a science fiction novel set in the near future where society needs to be rebuilt and it those who were neglected that are responsible for creating a better world. My Most Excellent Year brings together a group of teens that feel marginalized by race and sexuality. Riker's High gives a glimpse of the challenges for young people inside prison who desire to make better choices.
It is so important for me to help students develop their voice and feel they have power in society.
I think there is so much great literature for students to examine that will help them see that even when people feel powerless, they can find new directions to empower themselves and make their voice heard.
