My students need a reading nook rug and seating where they will be able to read and light up their imagination.

My Students
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? Do you remember how important finding a place to read without being interrupted was?
I teach amazing group of fourth graders in Harlem.
They come from homes where reading is not promoted, yet, like most kids, they love to read. My students attend a Title 1 school where over 90% of the students receive free lunch and where resources are very limited. The majority of my students are either English Language Learners, have a learning disability, or both. However, they walk into my room every morning with bright smiles and curiosity in their eyes, eager to learn and show how smart and great they really are!
My Project
Reading is a skill that carries us through life. My students are developing readers who don't have access to books at home, let alone a comfortable nook where they can let their imagination free. And so, in my classroom I am determined to create a space where they can do just that. I am requesting a small rug and chairs for my library area where students will be doing independent and pair reading through out the school day. It will also be a meeting place for small group instruction.
Having a reading nook will allow my students to read in a comfortable and safe place.
It will create that special place we all had as kids. It will get them excited about reading, which will get them reading more, strengthening their reading and comprehension skills.
