My Students
We're fighting a culture war here. The rural area we live in has the typical problems that come for inter-generational poverty, but we are opening a window to the world through literature that has resulted in children whose parents and grandparents never pursued education beyond high school wanting to attend college.
The majority of my students are impoverished.
Many of them are living in single parent or grandparent households. They often do not have even basic school supplies. They do not own books of their own, unless they have had them as gifts or prizes from school. Many of them do not have internet access at home and are at a disadvantage not only when doing school work because of that, but also when it comes to cultural and geographic exposure.
My Project
We already do reading circles wherein students participate in small group discussion of book team selections weekly, but currently, that means sitting on the floor on a throw rug donated by a parent or moving desks and chairs around. We'd like to have some comfy bean bag chairs, not only for this center, but also so that I can offer students a "reward" of independent reading time over in the reading center area on days when they have completed classwork or quizzes efficiently.
We want students to learn that reading is a worthy and fun activity that can and should replace time spent scrolling through social media sites and playing video games.
To help with that, we have developed a program giving students in our high school English classes, where students are presented with a "book talk" about several books, and then they are allowed to choose both which book they read and which "book team" they work with and the teams set their own independent reading schedules, create their own discussion questions, and conduct weekly book team discussions, with the teacher acting as a moderator and facilitator for the meetings.
