My Students

As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

My students are creative, clever and very spontaneous.

They like to move, they love to read and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households and all of them receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.

My Project

Currently in my classroom, I have a wide variety of reading abilities. I service students from reading level RB(Reading Behavior, non-readers) to level L (above grade level readers). It is my goal to make sure that I do my very best to bridge the gap and have as many students as possible leave 2nd grade reading on grade level. That means I need to use every tool in my belt in order to make that happen.

The reading materials for this project will service the wide range of needs in my classroom.

I will use these materials to build fluency, increase sight word awareness and develop comprehension skills. The consonant and vowel blocks will be perfect when helping students with spelling and phonics. The comprehension blocks will be a great manipulative for teaching comprehension during guided reading. The sight word book will be great for extra practice with my beginning readers. Aside from reading materials, we are also in need of a new pencil sharpener since our old one broke.

All these tools will help my students to become great readers in a hands-on and fun way!
