Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
When Scope Magazine is delivered the students are so excited to preview the articles and stories. The text inside is thought provoking and touches on issues people face today. The content evokes conversations, debates, and informed writing.
My school is located in an urban setting.
My students are from a rough neighborhood and coming to school everyday is the one constant that keeps them going. The school is a diamond in the rough, the neighborhood is dangerous but the school is a peaceful place. The students come from homes where parents and guardians struggle to make ends meet. Despite that struggle they want better for their children and they want them to get their education. The kids are unable to walk to a library and most do not have Internet access so they thirst for reading materials that are relevant to them and to the issues they face today.
My Project
We do not have the funding to purchase new text books that align with the new standards however Scope and Action magazine provide rich text and diverse topics that motivate my students. The stories make them think and debate and develop opinions about issues facing the world today. The students become thoughtful writers who are informed. They will learn how to think critically about many different subjects and how to respond to different points of view. The transformation comes from my students desire to read the materials because they are interesting and current. Half the battle of developing readers in sixth grade is to keep them engaged, the magazines do that and as a result the students will excel in reading.
These magazines will level the playing field for my students.
We need updated materials that align with the new standards so they can compete with the suburban school students who have these advantages. My students deserve to have resources that will challenge and help them become stronger readers and thinkers. Reading makes us stronger is so many ways.
