My Students

I'm excited to say that my students love to read! Independent reading time is their favorite time of the day. However, they tend to stick to the same genres. Exposing them to Roald Dahl will open their eyes and imagination to the wonderful world of fantasy.

I am a fourth grade teacher in a school at the heart of an urban community.

My students are diverse with a variety of personalities and interests. Their reading levels range from first to fifth grade. My students are pretty faithful to reading series like, Junie B. Jones, A to Z Mysteries, and Captain Underpants. These are great books! I have noticed that my fantasy section of the library doesn't get as much traffic as some of the other genres. With fantasy, you can completely let go; anything and everything is possible. Your imagination can run wild. I want my students to experience this.

My Project

"The Witches" is a wonderful and engaging fantasy that I think will have my students hanging at the edge of their seats. Roald Dahl has a way with words that makes you see and experience the story as if you were there. Plus, this book provides wonderful opportunities to practice essential reading skills such as: making inferences, creating character sketches, making connections, asking questions, summarizing, etc.

With your help I can kill two birds with one stone; introduce fantasy as a genre while incorporating reading strategies.

What better way to reinforce reading skills than with a novel that makes you want to jump inside the story and battle the bad guys with the main character? My hope is by the end of this novel, my fantasy bin in my library will be empty and my students will be begging me for more fantasy novels.
