Literacy development in the first grade is vital to the academic growth of a child. Each morning my students dive into literacy activities, including silent independent reading. My goal for my class is that they are all reading at or above grade level by the end of the year.
My classroom consists of 6-7 year olds that are eager to learn and love being at school.
My students come from various socio-economic groups, ranging from high-income to poverty. Not all students have access to appropriate reading material at home, so providing daily access to my classroom library allows me to put a book in the hands of my students each day.
My school is located in a growing city, with many students receiving free or reduced lunch. My students enjoy interactive learning games, using the classroom computers, and creating storybooks during writer's workshop.
My Project
My morning center rotations provide literacy activities that all of my students can enjoy, differentiated of course so that all students can feel successful. One center in particular is Read to Self, where the students choose books from my classroom library that are on their independent reading level to read to themselves, or with a partner.
Reading independently helps the child learn to "see" what they are reading, which also helps the students comprehend the story. Reading comprehension plays a big role in the advancement of reading levels, so the more book choices I am able to offer my students, the higher the chance they have of meeting the end-of-year reading requirement.
Funding this project will ensure that my students have enough books to choose from in my classroom library.
Once students enjoy the book by themselves, I will provide the opportunity for the student to take the book home so that they can read it to their parents. Having the opportunity to read grade-level books will ensure that my students now and future students will be ready for the next grade.
