This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a teacher in a low economic area of our school district. I teach Science and love to give my students hands-on experiences, but it can be costly. In order to achieve this and have a very positive impact on my students, they are in need of materials. Most of these students come from single parent, one income homes.
After working in this area for over 10 years, I see that many of these children are driven and have aspirations, they just do not always have the proper guidance.
I would love to give them experiences that do not come with their everyday living, by having necessary materials in my classroom to give them positive experiences.
My Project
This year our school has been faced with many hardships. We have been displaced from our "home" campus to share a campus with another school. Because of this, we do not have access to a library and students do not have books in their hands daily. They will use these books to keep up their reading skills that are detrimental in everyday life.
Giving that I teach in a low income area, most students are not reading on grade-level.
This will help them succeed and continue to build in those skills. Putting a book in any child's hands opens up a world of possibilities for them.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
